Director of Photography | Documentary Film “Mestre Sirso, Quando o Mundo é Silêncio a Vibração é Mestre”
In 2016, I had the honor of debuting as Director of Photography for the documentary film “Mestre Sirso, Quando o Mundo é Silêncio a Vibração é Mestre,” at the invitation of director and producer Emanuela Palma of Palma Produções.
The film is a deep immersion into the world of Sirso, a Capoeira master with a hearing impairment, and his perception of the world through sound vibration. My challenge as Director of Photography was to visually translate this unique sensory experience, aiming to capture the power of Capoeira as art, an inclusion tool, and a symbol of resistance within the Brazilian context.
We faced production with scarce financial resources, which, combined with my first foray into Directing Photography, made every stage an intensive learning experience. The team’s dedication and belief in the power of Sirso’s story were fundamental in overcoming challenges with creativity and passion.
The result of this collective effort was gratifying: completed in 2021, “Mestre Sirso” premiered at the Luanda International Panafrican Film Festival in 2022, was selected for the Pierre Verger Award’s Ethnographic Film Exhibition in the same year, and is currently available on Globoplay, Brazil’s most prestigious streaming platform.
