Bia Herbst
RIO DE JANEIRO, 1982
Hello! I’m Bia Herbst, a visual storyteller. As an advertising professional, photographer, and cinematographer, my gaze is guided by the quest to capture the ephemeral synthesized by sensitivity, revealing the beauty and depth of emotions in images that dialogue and inspire a deeper feeling. It’s an honor to welcome your visit here.
My creative journey has been shaped by diverse and rich experiences: from immersion in the visual universe during my Advertising and Marketing degree to over six years as a Marketing professional in the Luxury Market, which sharpened my perception of aesthetics and dreams, and a solid foundation in photography and cinema with great masters. These stages were crucial to refining the sensitivity I seek to convey in every project. This robust foundation is evident in my expertise in Architecture & Interior Photography and Video, Portraiture, and Audiovisual, with highlights such as directing photography for the documentary “Mestre Sirso” (now on Globoplay), working as a camera operator at the Rio 2016 Olympics, experiencing the vibrant event scene in Ibiza, and participating in exhibitions with my Fine Art Photography, all of which have shaped a multifaceted and deeply authorial perspective.
This interest in connecting worlds and perspectives prompted me to create B/Media, my nano-agency specializing in Design, Motion Graphics, and Digital Marketing. It’s where my creativity and strategy converge. I invite you to dive deeper into my universe.
Thank you so much for your interest in diving deeper into my journey and the philosophy that pulsates through each of my works. If my portfolio has already revealed a glimpse of what drives me, now I'll explain a little more about the story behind the lens—of that quest for the ephemeral, that je ne sais quoi that enchants, provokes reflection, and can convey a promising message.
The seed of this passion was planted early in my life, already reflected in my first job at a bookstore, where I loved being surrounded by books, especially art books. This initial immersion in the visual universe blossomed during my Advertising and Marketing degree in Rio de Janeiro. Although I interned at several agencies, my professional path was marked by a significant period of over six years as a Marketing Analyst for Avec Nuance, a multi-brand store in the Luxury Market. This experience, with intimate contact with fashion, dreams, belonging, and the importance of beauty – and even the superfluous – in life, alongside rich cultural immersion, provided me with a depth and sensitivity that I believe is imprinted in my works, in that 'ephemeral' I so much seek to capture and make resonate.
It was natural that my initial focus in photography was fashion, a field that continues to influence the aesthetic in my authorial photos. To deepen my technique and vision, I pursued a solid education in photography and cinema, immersing myself in renowned institutions such as Ateliê da Imagem (RJ), A Casa Foto e Arte (RJ), Ateliê Oriente (RJ), complemented by a postgraduate degree in Photography and Image at IUPERJ/UCAM, and courses at the Academia Internacional de Cinema (RJ and SP), the Instituto Latino-Americano de Cinema (SP), and the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia (Milan). Along this path, I had the privilege of being mentored by great names like Fabian Albertini, Lúcio Kodato, Marcio Scavone, Fábio Seixo, Greice Rosa, and Marco Antônio Portela, among other professionals who were decisive in shaping my vision and sensitivity.
Today, I primarily direct my energy and expertise into three areas that profoundly move me:
- Architecture & Interior Photography and Video: I see spaces as visual narratives waiting to be told. My mission here is to capture not just the aesthetics, but the soul, functionality, and atmosphere of each architectural and interior design project. I strive to create images and videos that enhance the vision of architects and designers, revealing how form and function unite to impact our well-being and perception of the world.
- Cinema and Documentary: Films, soap operas, documentaries, and series have always inspired me, and it is in cinema that I find a powerful way to tell stories that resonate. In this field, I had the pleasure of serving as Director of Photography for the documentary "Mestre Sirso, Quando o Mundo é Silêncio a Vibração é Mestre" (When the World is Silent, Vibration is Master), contributing to giving visual life to its potent narrative. Completed in 2021, the film premiered at the International Pan-African Film Festival in Luanda in 2022, and in the same year, it was selected for the Pierre Verger Award Ethnographic Film Exhibition. These achievements, celebrating the power of cinema as a tool for inclusion and art, elevated the documentary to a new level of reach by joining the catalog of Globoplay, Brazil's most prestigious streaming service. My audiovisual experience also includes producing making-of videos, working as an editor on corporate videos, and an unforgettable role as a Camera Operator at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics for Van Wagner Big Screen Networks, an experience that pulsated with energy and gave me a unique perspective.
- Fine Art: My authorial photography is the space where I freely explore my quest for the 'ephemeral.' I participated in the Onze-17 Photography Collective and exhibited my works in spaces such as Galeria de Arte Cândido Mendes (RJ), CCJF-RJ, the International Tiradentes Festival (MG), and for Backbonearts in London. Although this artistic side has been somewhat on pause since the pandemic, I still have unreleased photographs to present and long to resume and expand this body of work, bringing it to new galleries and making my artistic vision resonate again.
My versatility is a reflection of my curiosity. This openness dynamically led me to the vibrant party scene and renowned DJs in Ibiza. Since 2018, I've had the opportunity to photograph and film iconic events such as Lost in Ibiza and Solid Grooves, as well as other parties at renowned clubs like Privilege, Ocean Beach, and Hï Ibiza, capturing the pulsating energy of international DJ performances. This intense and multicultural experience has undoubtedly enriched my perspective and my ability to connect.
Ultimately, reflecting on this trajectory shows how, in fact, I am an intrinsically curious and multifaceted person. My range of interests is vast, spanning from erudite culture to the vibrant pop universe, with a special interest in the richness of Brazilian popular stories and culture. I believe this diversity of references fuels my creativity and my ability to connect with different themes and audiences. My experience living between Rome, Ibiza, and Rio de Janeiro also contributes to a global and multicultural perspective in my work, allowing me to dive into various cultures and translate them into images.
Looking ahead, my focus is to deepen my involvement in architecture and interior photography and video, cinema and documentary, and my expression in fine art. Concurrently, I am excited to continue running B/Media, a nano-agency that offers integrated visual solutions in Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, and Digital Marketing, uniting art with strategy to make brands and ideas resonate.
